A nap yesterday afternoon seems to have helped a lot. I was back to being fresh and completely untired in the morning. Ideally, I would like to do the miles first thing in the morning and then have a lot of time to recover before the next morning. Today feels like I could do a big mile day, but it is also a busy day, so I'll have to work to squeeze in the seven miles.
I just looked at the group on the TransAmerica virtual hike. I am in 5th place out of 65. It is not a race. Many of the partners may not even know I am watching them. There a 4 ahead of me who I will likely never catch. And a few close behind me. It does not bother me if some are ahead. I do not feel better than those behind. It is just a lesson in consistency. I do not want to be caught because I take a day off. Each person does what they are able to do and each does what is interesting to them.
Today I started the book "Becoming Odessa" by Jennifer Pharr Davis. She set the speed record of about 47 days for the Appalachian Trail. The book is about an earlier AT trip. Her writing style is very good. That means she has many of the same opinions I do.
The real reason for a 48 state hike is because it is calling to me in a way other trails are not. Most answers to "Why?" are really "Whats?" What will I experience on the trail that will be fun? What will be difficult? "Why?" happens both at the beginning and end of the thought. It is the place very first drive to complete a trail comes from. It is also the place after one runs out of answers when asked "Why?" It cannot be expressed.
It seems like today is going to be more mental than paying attention to physical things around me.
This blogging is becoming as difficult as the walking. Had to work some housecleaning into the mix today.
I saw a couple hopscotch boards drawn on the ground. The girl who lives there is about 5. She is the same one I saw fall in the rocks last week. The boards look like she saw them in a book or someplace. They are too small to play on. Maybe she did imaginary play. It seems like kids are getting outside more now than they did a few years ago.
Krister and I went to Phantom Canyon to cook hamburgers. Unfortunately, we forgot the buns. But the meat was still good between potato chips. We wished we brought our camping gear.
End of the Day Picture
I'm adding a couple new charts to my web page. It is motivational for some to set goals for miles. Mine is simply 7 miles a day. To make it in a year, I would have to average 20 miles a day. I do not like to draw the goal line all the way out. It is too demotivating to do that.
The seven day average is another good chart. It keeps me from being too exuberant on one day. It is better to gradually increase it as I get in better shape.
724.1 miles. 5/65 in group
