I was up around 2:30, but didn't get out until about 5:45. It was raining lightly until about 5:00.  We were planning to go to the mountain park, but it looks like it is going to rain on and off all day.

When I went out just before sunrise, I was treated to an assortment of spring fragrances. The bird wave was still going. The sky was overcast with low clouds. Over the city, the light was reflecting off the clouds with an orange glow. To the east, there is a hint of clearing. Another perfect day for walking.

The discussion on boots on www.backpacking.net was interesting. Several experienced backpackers said they prefer lightweight shoes. They felt there is no reason to switch from what is working for them. Nor would I suggest it. As long as gear is comfortable and it works it's not going to keep a person from completing a hike.

After a little breakfast, I hiked into the desert east of the college. It rained a lot last night so the soil was MUDDY. It stuck to my boots and slowed me down some. I did about 4 miles in it. On the way back I found a deep puddle and cleaned off the combat boots.

Unfortunately, there was a fence that kept me from going east as I wanted.

When I got home, the weather improved and Krister and I decided to go to the mountain Park. We hiked to the Camp Burch. It's an old Scout Camp. All I could find out about it is that it was washed out in the 40's and never rebuilt. That may explain why there were old cot frames scattered around.

I finally found some information on Camp Burch here. If I'm understanding this correctly, this is the first known Boy Scout camp in the Colorado.

Notice the tree growing out of the stones on the left side of the mantle.

While we were there, it started to snow lightly which was nice for the hike back. We sat on a log for awhile and just enjoyed the quiet snow.

Parts of the trail were pretty steep. That's Krister in front of me.

When we got home, we needed a few things from Vitamin Cottage. Actually I just wanted to go walk some more. It was very windy, in the 40's an threatening rain. I was kind of hoping it would rain.

Along the way, I saw this goose near the Green Store. It was still there on the way back.

In front of Vitamin Cottage there was a bicycle with an interesting trailer.

On the way home, I was treated to a light rain and a strong north wind in my face. It was refreshing since I was dressed right for it.

I was shocked to see I dropped to 7th place. A couple people had really big days. It makes me wonder if they were catching up on logging some days. The good news is I'm close to Lamont which I never expected. He may have skipped a couple days.
