Miles 605.5 to 613

I was a little more tired than normal this morning. Probably because I finished my miles late yesterday evening. After a lot of coffee, I feel great and ready to go. We decided to go hiking tomorrow instead of camping overnight, so it's another walking day.

There is some work that needs done today. Cut grass. Till the garden. And some general house cleaning.

Talk on a hike almost always turns to food eventually. It has taken longer to get in the food mood than usual, but now I'm craving a week's vacation in an all you can eat restaurent. I think if I ever hiked the AT, I'd stop off in New York City and take a 5 day cruise and eat continuously. It would probably be cheaper than motels and a restaurent.

For breakfast, I made something new. Fried eggs in my grandmother's iron skillet. Eggs taste better when fried on iron. I put it in a tortilla which I folded over like an omelet. On a whim, I put a mixture of sugar and cinnamon on it which was very good. There is still some cake left and I'm hungry.

Mission accomplished and the cake is eaten.

This afternoon I took the 5.1 mile college loop in the opposite direction than normal. I saw a lot of different little things I never noticed before. For instance, this old sign explaining the trail was funded by lottery money. There are a some bullet holes in it.

It threatened rain most of the walk. I figured it would move just south of us and it did. Now it's just windy.

Reading over the first paragraph, I realize I need to make some coffee. Be right back.

I just realized I've been eating all day. I cut the grass at a local restaurant in exchange for a meal.  It's one of those deals that works out better for both of us. Then I went for a walk and had a McDouble and fries at McDonald's. When I got home I had a big burrito from Chipotle's. So why do I still feel hungry?

It's time for some Folger's in my cup. There must be some brain cells in the coffee. I wrote a review of boots today. You can find the link in the Gear section or just above this post. I put it on www.backpackers.net. There wasn't much acceptance. Two very experienced hikers I respect a lot were stuck on the old concept of boots.  I did not write it to convince people to change. But the Danner combat boots are so good, I think a lot of hikers would be happy with it. Instead of calling it a boot, I should have called it a new kind of footwear designed and field tested by tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of soldiers in Afghanistan. When I spoke to the rep at Danner, they said they took a lot of input from soldiers when they designed the boots. I'll just keep that here until I call Danner tomorrow to confirm the last part.

Today, I called it quits while I still had a good bit left. I could have gone to 9.5 miles, but I didn't want to press the recovery time to tomorrow morning. Ideally, I'd like to get all my miles quickly in the morning and then sleep and eat until the next morning. Oh and write. Making one of these pages takes a surprising amount of time for me.

End of day picture

Cool, I'm on Belleville Ave. which is the name of the town I grow up in. I'm going on to St. Joseph Ave. which is the name of my mother's childhood church.

TransAmerica Trail

I'm in 6th place now. It was real tempting to just go walk 0.8 miles and get into 4th.  If it were a real trail, I probably would catch up and we could go eat pizza or something.
